Description

Single and 2-storey, rectangular-plan classical courtyard steading and isolated range to E. Squared and snecked rubble with droved ashlar margins (some raised), large dressed ashlar and some roughly-squared quoins. Keystoned Venetian windows; voussoired segmental cart arches; stone mullions. circular rubble-walled horse excercise ring enclosure to NW.

The Buildings of Scotland volume mentions a central circle of cobbles within the courtyard. Davis had worked at Kilmory Castle, to which the steading belonged, between 1828 and 1836, and the Clock Lodge at the entrance to the estate is also attributed to him. He was a London architect, brought up by Sir John Orde when he purchased the estate from the Campbells in 1828. (Historic Scotland).

Development History
1975: The Kilmory Castle Estate is acquired by Argyll and Bute District Council. November 1996: Kilmory Castle itself is now an HQ for Argyll and Bute Council. Permissions are sought to erect a new office building and car park in the grounds. SCT comments that the repair and re-use of the farm should form part of the scheme. December 1997: External inspection reveals the farm to be disused and rapidly deteriorating. August 2000: External inspection reveals that the roof has significantly deteriorated. December 2001: The farm is B-listed. October 2003: External inspection reveals no change. November 2005: The Argyllshire Advertiser reports that Argyll and Bute Coucil is to look in to the possibilities for the future use of this property. It is hoped that the findings will be available by March/ April next year. May 2006: Local planners report that this is an active area for action. Feasibility study is now being commisioned. A bid to HS under Heritage Economic Regeneration Fund was unsuccessful. Potential for Dalriada Project HQ. Talks underway with FC, SNH and SEPA.
January 2009: The Argyllshire Advertiser reports on a fire which affected the building on 13th December 2008. The roof sustained substantial damage but the council still plans to renovate the entire building for community use in partnership with the Kilmory Home Farm Project Group which was established in 2006.
October 2009: External inspection finds the farm buildings are now in an advance state of decay. Vandalism is making the potential restoration of the property a diminishing prospect and the heavy vegetation growth around the site may even worsen the decay. Dangerous building notices have been erected around the site.
27 July 2012: Vegetation growth makes full external inspection difficult, but there does not appear to have been a significant change from the previous site visit.
