Description

2 small square ashlar lodges to the former Valleyfield House which was demolished in 1918. The north lodge features a roundel bearing a horse's head. The south lodge is topped by a pyramidal slate roof, though the roof of the north lodge has now collapsed. (Historic Scotland)

A set piece that originally included lions atop stone pillars from which gates to the estate were hung, to the either side were smaller entrances for pedestrians. The two buildings were originally in use as one residence - one as sleeping accomodation, the other living accomodation. (Fife Council)

Development History
March 1989: Permission is sought for the taking down, re-siting and rebuilding of the lodges. SCT supports the plans. May 1990: External inspection reveals the lodges to be in poor condition and subject to graffiti and vandalism. Local planners report that Dunfermline District Council is hoping to purchase both the lodges and rebuild them at the Newmills entrance to Valleyfield Wood. January 1995: Local planners report that relocation will not now take place. January 2002: Local planners report that some repair works have been undertaken to the gatepiers. There is currently no proposed re-use for the lodges. June 2005: External inspection reveals no change. October 2006: Brown and Co. (agents) confirmed that there were plans sometime ago to relocate the lodges to the country park but this has not yet come to fruition. October 2006: The owners report to SCT that there are no changes to the record. October 2007: External inspection reveals the 4 walls and piers is all that remains of each lodges. Inappropriate use of cement may have put the remaining masonry at risk.
August 2010: External inspection finds no significant change from the previous site visit. Deterioration continues.
29 April 2019: External inspection finds no significant change from previous visit. No sign of maintenance but structures appear stable. Grounds around lodges are tended.
