Description

3 storeys, 3 bays. Modern shop front flanked by narrow entrances to pend and upper floors; ashlar facade: roll moulding to windows; shallow corbelling below 2nd floor cills. Crowsteps; coped end stacks; slate roof. Pend to rear comprising 3, 2, and single storey range of buildings; rubble with tooled dressings. (Historic Scotland)

Development History
August 2000: External inspection reveals the upper floors to be vacant and unmaintained. January 2005: External inspection reveals that the upper floors appear in use with the property in good condition. The shop at the ground floor remains vacant. Moved to SAVED.
June 2008: External inspection finds the upper floors of the property to be vacant with a window boarded up. Moved back to At Risk.
September 2011: Scottish Civic Trust report the upper floors of the building remain vacant with one window boarded over.
12 July 2012: External inspection finds the upper floors remain vacant. The rear elevation is in especially poor condition. Listed Building Consent for full demolition of pend buildings (137 High Street) and facade retention of 139 High Street to create a new access point to the St Giles shopping centre (to the rear of the building) is currently being sought ref: 12/00390/LBC.
14 July 2015: External inspection finds the building remains in much the same condition as seen previously. Gutters are chocked with vegetation. Full Planning Permission for the facade retention of 139 High Street and demolition of rear pend buildings to create a access point for an extended St Giles Shopping Ctr was conditionally approved Oct 2013 rear: 12/00389/APP.
4 March 2024: Desk-based assessment suggests the upper floors remain disused.
