Development History
20 May 2004: The Berwickshire News reports that the building has been vacant for 15 years. It was saved from demolition 4 years ago when plans to convert it into a cinema/theatre are mooted. However, independent consultants have concluded that this would not be viable, with costs estimated at £1 million. Further options are now being advanced, including conversion into a rentable public space or marketing the property for sale. It could also be demolished to make way for a central park with open air performance facilities.
March 2009: External inspection reveals that the building is partially vacant. The front elevation has been fenced off and a notice is attached stating that the council contact centre has moved from the building due to structural problems. Scaffolding has been erected on the side of the building.
September 2011: External inspection finds no significant change from the previous site visit.
21 June 2016: Listed Building Consent for alterations to form a social innovation centre is being sought ref: 16/00693/LBC. The associated town hall is proposed for demolition ref: 16/00692/CON.
21 February 2019: A member of the public advises the property is being marketed for sale through appointed agent Edwin Thomson, offers over £100,000 are being sought.
11 August 2022: A member of the public has informed BARR that the building has been damaged by heavy storms and sections of the roof suffer from slate loss.
