Development History
December 2007: External inspection reveals the building appears to have been sitting empty for some time. Most of the windows have one, or more, broken glazing. There is foliage growth in the gutters and on flat surfaces. The roof lights have been taped over.
18 July 2013: External inspection finds the building in partial, temporary by a woodcarver and some minor repairs have been carried out to the roof. Otherwise, there is little change since the previous visit it, although a sapling is now growing from the West elevation, over the River Cart. The published Glasgow City Council Pollok Park Management Plan 2011-2016 notes that the former sawmill is not in use as there is not a requirement for large amounts of sawn timber on the estate. Whilst it is recognised a working sawmill would be a significant attraction to visitors, the associated Health and Safety obligations would probably prohibit the use of the belts and wheels that make the complex interesting. The report goes on to note that the sawmill has been used in the generation of electricity in the past and that this option may benefit from further consideration.
27 February 2019: With funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Glasgow City Council and the Architectural Heritage Fund, Glasgow Building Preservation Trust undertook a feasibility study into the future of the Old Stable Courtyard (including sawmill). The study was commissioned by Glasgow City Council’s Land and Environmental Services and was completed in early 2018. There is significant support for the repair and redevelopment of the buildings as a mixed use attraction.
4 February 2022: BBC News reports (27/10/2021) that the property is set to receive £13 million from the UK Government's Levelling Up fund for restoration works, which will be hydro-powered and include a community centre with education facilities and space for local community schools.
15 February 2022: Glasgow Times reports (11/02/2022) that horses will be brought to the stables as part of the redevelopment of the stables into a visitor attraction. Other features will also include a café, an event space and training and employment opportunities for local residents. The article goes on to note that traditional power generation and renewable technologies will establish both the sawmill and stables as net zero carbon neutral site.
22 April 2022: A member of the public advises the phased restoration of the sawmill is underway in parallel with works to repair the adjacent stables. Moved to Restoration in Progress.
