Description

Substantial red sandstone building. Three storey, five bays to front eight to side. Crowstep gables on the dormers. Substantial one and two storey extension to rear.

Architect James Graham Fairley was born in 1846 at West Calder, the eldest son of William Fairley, millwright and engineer, and his wife Elizabeth Graham. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and his training commenced with four years of practical building experience in his father's business. His practice was primarily West Lothian and Dundee-based, but he also had connections in the United States where he designed two very large houses. (Dictionary of Scottish Architects)

Development History
March 2008: External inspection finds the building to be boarded up. The hoppers are clogged with vegetation but otherwise the property is in fair condition.
The hotel is understood to have closed since Nov 2006 following the relocation to new premises of Dreadnought Rock, a local music venue.
19 August 2010: External inspection finds the building remains derelict and is slowly deteriorating. Plant growth along gutters and some downpipes suggests blockages and leaks.
February 2011: A member of the public contacts SCT to advise the property remains vacant and boarded up.
14 April 2015: External inspection finds dampness, caused by leaking gutters and downpipes, evident as is rising damp. The building remains disused.
14 February 2024: Desk-based assessment suggests the building remains disused. West Lothian Council served a Dangerous Building Notice in 2018, to remedy loose material to the front elevation's pediment (18/0009)
