Description

2-storey 3-bay barn, thatched single storey byre set at acute angle nearby. Both structures built of coursed rubble and gabled. Barn: (possibly raised in height) door on north east wall below inscribed white marble tablet; 3 windows above; corrugated iron roof (presumably thatched formerly); roofless additions beside door and on north west gable. Byre: inner door to long south front; single window to either gable; drain near west end of north wall; muran thatch roof, secured with ropes and netting, stone weights over inner wall head, pegs on gable head.

Tablet records birthplace of Norman MacLeod of Berneray (for whom see Dictionary of National Biography vol XII, p 660) (tablet noted in RCAHM Inventory, 1928 No 114, which includes information that the actual site of the house was 20 yards further north).(Historic Environment Scotland List Entry)

Development History
January 2009: External inspection finds the corrugated iron roof to be failing allowing water ingress, particuarly at wallheads. The muran thatch is failing at apex of the single storey addition to NW.
March 2010: External inspection finds the barn, part of an interesting group of buildings, in an advancing state of decay. Local planners report the owners of the building have previously been approached by the local community with a proposal for restoration, but did not wish to proceed.
30 January 2015: A member of the public advises the condition of the building has deteriorated - possibly as the result of recent storms. The principle deterioration is to the lean-to single storey section where areas of the thatch have been lost, exposing roof timbers or the turf divots.
10 June 2015: External inspection finds the building remains in much the same condition as seen previously - subject to continued deterioration, notably to the thatched section.
