Description
Gate and layout of cemetery by James R Findlater, circa 1840, extended to N by Patrick Findlater, CE, plans dated 1868, completed later. Cemetery contains a notable series of Victorian and later monuments.(Historic Environment Scotland List Entry)
Western Cemetery was originally opened by a commercial company in 1845, and then purchased by the City of Dundee District Council in 1979. Burials within the cemetery include; James Bowman Lindsay (1799-1862) an early experimenter with electricity who, in 1835 demonstrated a 'constant electric light,' 40 years before Thomas Edison, Preston Watson (1880-1915) was an aeronautical pioneer who some claim to have made the worlds first powered flight over the Carse of Gowrie, several months before the Wright brothers in America.(Dundee City Council)

Development History
February 2010: Inspection finds many gravestones have fallen over, many are broken into multiple parts. Many urns and other carved stone elements lie on the ground, often broken. Some monuments have "Danger" signs of them and lean precariously.
27 May 2016: Inspection finds a large number of fallen or dismantled gravemarkers, notably towards the southern section of the cemetery. A considerable number of further grave markers bases have been eroded, exposing their brick plinths. Areas of exposed soil around the bases of the gravemarkers suggest the use of herbicide: this can act to accelerate soil erosion, in turn destabilising the grave markers. The stone-built stepped terrace to the top, northern section of the cemetery has been subject to significant vegetation growth, causing a bulge to the eastern end. A mausoleum to the north east is being engulfed by ivy and has eroded masonry.
23 February 2023: A member of the public reports that safety measures are currently being undertaken in the cemetery with stones being laid flat.
