Crawford Priory Mausoleum, Walton Hill, Cults

Large, classical, roughly cruciform-plan mausoleum, now derelict and semi ruinous, built on site of prehistoric fort. Polished ashlar, mostly V-channelled. Blocked entrance to north west, round-headed opening in projecting pedimented porch, originally with flanking columns, but these destroyed. Stands in rectangular enclosure with rubble-built retaining walls; tall, square, rusticated ashlar gatepiers to west.
First used in 1781 for George 21st Earl of Crawford but A H Millar suggests building contemporaneous with Crawford Lodge (ie 1758). (Historic Environment Scotland List Entry)

28 June 2018: Nominated for the Register by a member of the public as being in poor condition, vandalised. Building sits upon a fort, a scheduled monument, the scheduling specifically excludes the burial). For Investigation.

12 June 2019: External inspection finds the building in overall very poor condition. Whilst sections of roofing remain they are in very poor condition with mature vegetation growth. Enclosure sections are subject to extensive vegetation growth. Walls are subject to collapse in sections. The surrounding woodland is encroaching the overall building. Move to At Risk.
