Description

Cruciform block of public conveniences. Sandstone ashlar, base course, channelled masonry above, frieze, cornice and ashlar parapet with sections of balustrade. 4-bay elevations to N and S; rectangular porch projections in bays to W of centre, each with 3-light window strip below frieze and moulded doorways on returns (W to Ladies, E to Gents). Further 3-light strip in outer bays to W; 4-light strips in bays to E of centre; doors in bays to outer E, moulded surrounds. End elevations to E and W with 4-light strips. Border-glazed, square, metal hopper windows. Panelled timber doors with plate glass fanlights.

The public conveniences were probably built for Glasgow Corporation Tramways who commissioned designs for a much smaller convenience from Frank Burnet and Boston in 1914 (SRA 1914/307). These lavatories evidently replaced those erected by 1932, possibly those by Burnet and Boston. They must have been Cook's first architectural work as he was conscripted by the Army and sadly captured by the Japanese in 1940, dying in 1943 while working on the Burma Railway. (Historic Scotland)

Development History
October 1999: The building is vacant and unused. November 2007: External inspection reveals the building to remain vacant. The building has been secured and appears to be undergoing basic maintenance. The walls have been graffitied.
November 2010: External inspection finds the building remains derelict and in much the same condition as on our previous visit. Graffiti has been removed from the south elevation. Though the parapet is extremely damp the walls do not appear to be suffering. A few more window panes were found to be broken on this visit.
July 2011: Listed building consent and planning permission for use of public toilets as restaurant/cafe (Class 3), internal and external alterations to
listed building, use of footway as associated external seating area, are currently being sought ref: 11/01427/DC & 11/01428/DC
December 2011: A member of the public advises conversion works are underway. Moved to Restoration in Progress.
14 September 2017: A member of the public advises the conversion of the former public conviences stalled around 2015. Moved back to At Risk from Restoration in Progress.
10 August 2023: External inspection finds that some works have been carried out but the building remains unoccupied. It appears that the masonry has been painted, although there are areas where it has peeled and bubbled. Landscaping works have been carried out immediately around the building. There are weathered timber sheets covering the door openings. One temporary covering has a large gap at the bottom and is damaged. Heras fencing is erected around the site. Remains At Risk.
