Description
Single storey outbuildings, now a roofless shell but consolidated.
Port Wemyss was founded by Walter Frederick Campbell of Islay, 1833 as Wemysshaven, named after his father-in-law, Francis, 8th Earl of Wemyss and March. The street layout follows a D-plan; could this be in memory of "Great Daniel" the Glasgow tobacco lord, Daniel Campbell, Laird of Islay, 1726-53? The settlement is entirely residential, the original houses being single storey and loft set gable-to-gable along the streets. (ref: FA Walker)
