Development History
July 2011: External inspection finds the building has been vacant for at least two years. String courses are damp and green. Grass and bushes are gaining footholds on upper flat surfaces. The roof is mossy. The ground floor previously operated as a coffee shop/ bakery.
12 April 2012: A member of the public advises that the property is thought to be in the ownership of Dumfries and Galloway Council.
7 May 2014: External inspection finds the building remains in much the same condition as seen previously, although to ground floor retail unit is now in use.
15 November 2018: Community arts and development organisation Midsteeple Quarter's website notes Dumfries and Galloway Council has agreed to transfer ownership of the building to the community benefit society. The building is part of a wider initiative to bring a number of disused buildings in Dumfries back into use as enterprise space at gound level, with rented flats to upper floors.
22 March 2022: A member of the public contacts BARR to advise that works on the property have begun, noting that the back of the building has been demolished and the façade retained.
25 March 2022: Planning permission (19/1979/FUL) conditionally granted for erection of building containing retail and exhibition area (mixed class 1/class 10 use), workshop and office space (class 4) and seven flatted dwellings (including demolition of roof and fabric of existing studio to rear).
10 January 2024: BBC News website reports the public is being asked to participate in choosing a new name for the property, which is undergoing redevelopment through the Midsteeple Quarter Project. The article goes on to note the building's regeneration is due to complete later in 2024. Moved to Restoration in Progress.
