Dreghorn Primary School (Former), Main Street, Dreghorn

Substantial 2 storey red ashlar built school in neo-Jacobean style with pitched slated roofs over and ogival gablets at 1st floor level. Numerous architectural embellishments including an elaborately decorated panel over the entrance "Dreghorn Public School". Later extension to the rear. Low coped boundary wall with railings.

15 October 2014: External inspection finds the striking former school building in generally fair conditon but disused following the construction of a new school on a different site in the village, which opened in 2013. A number of windows are boarded up. Localised areas of dampness at dampness at downpipes and wallheads are evident. BBC news website reported in Mar 2014 on plans by Arran Brewery to redevelop the site into Scotland's first sake brewery with research and teaching facilities.

26 March 2015: Full Planning Permission for conversion to form a brewery with associated facilities was conditionally approved Dec 2014 ref: 14/00672/PP.

16 February 2018: Local planners advise the proposed development has yet to be implemented and may have stalled.

26 November 2019: External inspection finds that window boards have been removed and a new sign for 'Arran's Dreghorn Brewery' erected. No visible evidence of conversion works, although staff car onsite. Condition appears to have deteriorated since last visit. Rainwater goods in need of maintenance. Reports by various news sites of persistent vandalism - numerous broken windows, removal of lead elements, stolen goods etc. Remain At Risk.

13 April 2022: Currently being marketed for sale through auction with Future Property Auctions. £765,000 opening bid.

14 July 2022: A member of the public advises there has been a fire at the building. The Irvine Times reported (13/7/2022) on a fire at the building on 12 July. The article goes on to note the former school remains disused and has been the regular target of vandalism. Arran Brewery retain a unit within the wider site.

12 January 2023: Property no longer listed for sale.
Irvine Times on the 4th November 2022 reported that the owners have been in contact with the council’s planning, regeneration and business growth services in order to apply for a repurposing property grant fund for a feasibility study on the building.
